Drake is over. Long live Drake.
Champagne Papi is out of the top 100 but the 6ix still has his back
I know when that hotline bling. That can only mean one thing. Billboard is calling to say that you have been bounced off the Hot 100 Chart for the first time in 8 years.
Yes after an unprecedented record setting 431 day run on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, Canada's own Aubrey Graham doesn't have a single on the hallowed list for the first time since the launch of his music career.
"Passionfruit" and "Signs" just couldn't hang on any longer tumbling off the chart like the Price Is Right mountain climber.
But what a journey it was. Drake left pal Lil Wayne in the dust back at 326 weeks and the rest of the artists on that list have a long climb to catch up.
Most Consecutive Weeks on Billboard Hot 100
431, Drake
326, Lil Wayne
216, Rihanna
207, Nicki Minaj
161, Chris Brown
159, JAY-Z
152, Nelly
141, Kenny Chesney
139, Destiny's Child
139, Katy Perry
139, Taylor Swift
Not since Jimmy's shooting on Degrassi the Next Generation have we had to endure such Drake devastation. In situations like this there is only one thing to do. Mourn.
So let's take a quick look back at the man that was Billboard's hottest on the Hot 100: Drizzy.
(Writer's note: While I would have liked a slowed down ballad version of "Hotline Bling" performed by Canada's premiere chanteuse Celine Dion to play while you read this, the CBC denied my "unreasonable" budgetary request. Apparently they don't grasp the seriousness of this situation.)
Started From the Bottom
While Drake currently boasts a staggering 157 charted titles, it all started with one song, "Best I Ever Had"...and well… it was the best we ever had too. Suddenly Jimmy Brooks was standing...and swearing:
I say, you da f***in' best you da f***in' best
You da f***in'' best you da f***in' best
You the da best I ever had,
Best I ever had, best I ever had, best I ever had
I say you da f***in'
No Drake….you da f***in!
Little did we know what was to come.
Optimum Pointers
It quickly became clear that those Degrassi days were long gone. It was time to pop the cork on Champagne Papi and let the confetti fly in the dental care aisle of Shoppers Drug Mart.
"Started From The Bottom" cemented Drake's status as a good Canadian boy. He was increasingly an international superstar but he sure as hell wasn't going to forget about home. Toronto Parks and Rec, the Toronto skyline, Shoppers, even his mom makes a cameo in "Started From The Bottom".
Ok, sure, Drake did grow up in Forest Hill… a rather privileged upper class suburb in Toronto. But in his defence, when you are an obscure Canadian Degrassi actor trying to rebrand and conquer all of Hip Hop worldwide… yeah that's starting from the bottom.
Love In a Hopeless Place
Let's be honest, breaking Billboard records is great and all but what does it mean without a little love. Enter Rihanna.
When Riri and Drake released "What's My Name", it made shopping for milk sexy again and we all learned what the square root of 69 was (8-sumthin or more accurately 8.306623862918075).
More importantly we were witnessing a chemistry that left us wanting more...and they would give it to us. "Take Care", "Too Good"… Rihanna even came to Toronto to film her video for "Work", showing us how to rotate after some Roti at one of Aubrey's favourite Canadian restaurants, The Real Jerk.
It was magical. Dates to the aquarium in Toronto ending in matching shark tattoos.
Dinner dates! Collaborations! A new music supercouple to rival Jay-Z and Beyonce! That is until Drake publicly declared his love at last year's MTV VMAs.
Then things seemed to fall apart after she snubbed a kiss on stage.
What's wrong with you, Rihanna!? Drake is our finest Canadian export! Have you no heart!? He's loved you since he was 22 years old! You're a monster!
Listen, Rihanna, I'm sorry. I'm very emotional right now after this Billboard thing. I don't know what Aubrey's future looks like and it's making me lash out. Call me, I'll take you to the aquarium. I'm sorry.
Six Six Bish
Don't worry Mr. Graham, no matter what happens there is one place that will always have your back - Toronto. We know you love The Six and The Six loves you. Drake had one #1 hit on this epic Billboard Hot 100 run and that was "One Dance". The crowning jewel from his "Views" album.
But we need to be honest about the greatest success story from this record breaking time in history and that's Drizzy's hometown shout out on his album cover. Join me as we look back at the best 6 tiny Drake memes that made us love him more than we ever thought possible.
Ok, now that we have moved through all the stages of loss and grief together, it's time to get real. The Six God is going to be just fine. If he's dropped off the Billboard charts momentarily it's because he's busy building an empire. Yes, Aubrey's gunning for mogul status. This pic snapped in Toronto seems to suggest Drake's getting deeper into the restaurant game with a place called Pick 6. I wonder if they will serve owl? Now that would be a game changer.
Don't worry about Drake. OVO is going strong and if you need any assurance that this guy is still on top of his game and still in love with Canada, just check out his recent OVO Fest performance featuring a massive replica of his favourite structure… the CN Tower.
Yeah, this guy isn't going anywhere.
