You don’t have to break the bank or a bone to make this easy DIY sculptural light.

Sculptural lighting is all the rage these days, but these unique decor pieces often come with a hefty price tag. But there's no need to pay artisan prices because Steven Sabados showed us how to make customized lighting at home with just a few simple — and unexpected — supplies. Made of chicken wire and casting tape, this low-effort project results in a high-impact piece of decor. The tape used to make the cast for Steven's broken foot served as serious inspo for this project… because of course he would turn a trip to the ER into into a DIY! Lucky for us, his foot has healed and he's back to sharing stunning DIYs.

You'll need plenty of casting tape for this project. It's perfect for creating the structure of your artwork because it's lightweight, durable and strong. Plus it's porous, so you'll get a nice glow when your DIY is lit. You can use any colour you like, but Steven opted for bright pink. Here's how to get started.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 6-8 rolls of casting tape (found at a medical supply stores)
  • Fluorescent lighting kit, or any CFL kit that won't overheat
  • Water and bowl (for dipping your tape into)
  • ¼ inch chicken wire (you can find it at the hardware store)
  • Wire clippers
  • Wire, zip ties or twist ties
  • Safety gloves (for use with the wire clippers)

Here's how to do it:

1. Cut your chicken wire with the wire clippers to your desired size.

2.  Next, shape your chicken wire. Since you're aiming for a unique, sculptural look, there are no real rules for shaping — so do whatever you think looks best. Use wire, zip ties or twist ties at the back of your structure to hold it on place.

3. Dip your casting tape into water leaving it just long enough for it to get wet. Next, wrap the tape around the sculpture. This is easiest to do with a partner because the casting tape dries quickly and you'll want to move fast!

4. Once you're happy with the sculpture, let it dry and add your light kit to the inside. You may need to cut the back of the cast to fit your light inside.

5. Hang on the wall!
