Maximize your small space with these planning ideas

Here are some "outside-the-box" storage solutions that will help make your small space way more organized.

When you live in a small space, you need to become uber-organized or else things can turn chaotic real fast. Keeping your space clean and tidy gets a lot easier when you're able to find new uses for items you already have laying around! Here are some out of the box storage solutions that will help maximize whatever size of space you've got:

Use your height! Vertical lines draw our eyes up. Make sure you're doing you home justice by storing stuff at every height.

Install towel rails to hang your high heels.

Use shelf brackets to hang clothes if you're short on closet space!

Create art by placing a shadowbox on a hinge, hiding your jewelry.

Add a slimline wall-mount mirror system to your wall. It comes with storage, takes up very little square footage, and gives you an extra opportunity to primp in the morning.

Invest in an ottoman with storage. It can double as a coffee table!

Space planning tips:

Space planning is a fundamental part of the interior design process. It starts with figuring out how the space is going to be used. The space we're using here is 100 sq ft.

  • When planning, start with what is going to be the largest piece in the room. The walls in the space generally dictate where the largest piece will have to go.
  • Lay tape on the floor of the exact measurements of the furniture you want to buy.
  • Don't buy anything until you've measured your space.
  • When it comes to "flex" room in your home, ask: What am I going to be using the space for? How many people are going to be in the space at one time?
  • Allow for a 3' passageway (at least 2 ft) between the wall and a piece of furniture, which will create natural paths around the room.
