This season's footwear is all about making a statement. The fall runways have brought a surprising amount of newness, while still mixing in some nods to trends of the past, resulting in a shoe that is anything but average. Power colours, glitter, luxe details – it's all about slipping into something unexpected to infuse your day to day wardrobe with a little extra flair. And with so many covetable picks out there to choose from, stylist Genny Iannucci stopped by The Goods to weigh in on the ones you'll want to bring home.

Silver glitter

Silver glitter and shiny boots and shoes were all over the runways for fall 2017. They add a bolt of energy to any look in all forms, from tall boots, to sneakers, booties, oxfords and pumps. Silver glitter is the perfect way to amp up an evening look and pairs perfectly with a little black dress.

The runways this season have made it clear that glitter and shine are not just for evening. Consider wearing a pair of silver sneakers with your jeans or a glitter oxford or bootie with trousers. Just be sure to let your shoes take the spotlight by avoiding head to toe glitter.

Red

Red was the major colour statement on the fall runways both in footwear and clothing. This classic colour reads confident and bold. If you incorporate just one new footwear trend this season, make it red. Think of is as a neutral – it works beautifully with all other neutral hues such as black, navy, grey, cream and looks especially chic with camels, browns and mid-to-dark denim.

Try giving menswear inspired plaids and pinstripes a feminine edge by pairing them with a red shoe or bootie. Don red shoes and boots with an all red outfit for an-of-the moment look. If a scarlet red shoe is a bit too bold for you, opt for a toned down version in burgundy or wine.

Combat boots

This one's a throwback to the 90's. The combat boot came on strong on designer runways this fall. Available in both low and high heel versions, feminine embellishments and bold textures make them new this season.

Pair this trend with a cropped jean or trouser to show off an edgy style. Combat boots also work beautifully tucked into skinnies and leggings. Wear them with unexpected feminine pieces such as flirty short dresses or boho inspired maxi dresses. Wear a higher heeled combat boot with a midi pencil skirt for an edgy day to evening look.

Embellishments

More is more this season as footwear designers embraced wonderful textures from velvets to satins to brocades and embellished them with feathers, sequins, pearls, crystals and embroidery. Heels are getting the detailed treatment as well with eye-catching embellishments and new shapes.

With highly embellished shoes, keep the rest of your outfit simple or highly sophisticated to avoid an overly-busy look. Mix this style with more casual pieces, and the high-low mix makes for an ultra-cool style. While an embellished shoe is a natural choice for evening, work them into your day and weekend rotation as well.

Slouchy

A throwback to the 80's and 90's, slouchy boots have made a major comeback this season. Slouchy boots usually read laidback, cool and chic, and are available in so many heel heights and styles. The ruching detail adds interest to any outfit, and the wider leg opening makes it an easy fit for those with muscular calves.

Wear these boots tucked into jeans and leggings, allowing for the rushing to really stand out.  Pair with skirts and dresses with raised hemlines to show off the detail. If you're going for a cropped pant, slouchy booties are the perfect pairing.
