4 fashion DIYs that will make you runway ready
If you've been keeping watch on runways across the world, you'll know that the fashion industry can't get enough of two trends right now: faux fur and studs. Faux fur, in particular, has been popping up everywhere, with designers using it to add a bit of luxury to just about anything — entire sleeves, shoes, even nails! So, we're showing you a few easy, DIY ways that you can add these fashionable elements to items you already own.
DIY faux fur coat
Our coat is inspired by looks from Versace and Miu Miu, which start at a whopping $4,000, but we're going to show you how to make one for under $100. You could add fur to the collars, cuffs or even the pockets of your coat, but we love the look of adding fur to the entire bottom hem. Not your typical placement, but it's one that will make a dramatic difference.
So, grab an old black coat that's been sitting in the back of your closet. You can also pick something inexpensive up at the mall and give it an instant upgrade. You want the coat itself to be simple, the fur will be your drama.
What you'll need:
- Jacket
- Piece of faux fur
- Scissors
- Lint roller
- Safety pins or tacking stitches
- Heavy needle and thread
- Hot glue or fabric glue
Directions:
- Measure and cut a full piece of faux fur, adding about 4 inches on the bottom and the sides. Be careful while cutting this material, as the fur has a tendency to fly everywhere. Mark where you need to cut and brush the fur in opposite directions so you have a clean line to cut.
- Use a lint roller to collect the excess fur that falls off, and cut from the top of the fabric so you're not cutting through the fur.
- Take safety pins or tacking stitches to hold the fabric in place and then hand sew it onto the coat using a heavy needle.
- Fold the faux fur over, get some hot glue or fabric glue and attach to the inside bottom hem of the coat.
DIY faux fur heels
Faux fur heels are a thing — for real. We're making a pair that's inspired by the ones Rihanna wore outside, during the day, to run errands. It may sound crazy to wear fur on your feet outside of the boudoir, but it can be done, it can be chic, and it can cost you only $10.
Do you have an pair of strappy sandals that are currently collecting dust? Here's how you can give them new life and a whole new look.
What you'll need:
- Heels
- Marabou boa
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
Directions:
- Start by cutting a piece from the boa that is the same length as the toe strap. You can double up the boa to make it thicker.
- Use the glue gun to add glue onto the toe strap, making sure to cover the entire thing.
- Carefully apply the boa to the strap. Tap gently on the boa to get it on good, and then go back underneath with the glue gun and get all of the edges you might have missed.
DIY faux fur keychain
Fendi has been selling these fur pom pom keychains for up to $2500. We're not exactly sure why you'd need a thousand dollar purse ornament, but either way, we're going to show you how to make one for $10.
What you'll need:
- Quarter yard of any colour faux fur (long-haired)
- Bowl
- Sharpie
- Heavy needle and thread
- Cotton balls
- Keychain
Directions:
- Take your faux fur, draw the outline of a bowl on the back part of the fur with a Sharpie, then cut out the circle you've traced.
- Take your heavy duty needle and thread and do a large stitch around the edge of the circle (this is called a baste stitch).
- Once you've threaded the outline of the fur, start cinching it and then fill up the pocket with cotton balls.
- Tighten the thread so it closes up at the top, sew it shut, then sew in your keychain until it's secure.
DIY studded sneakers
This next one is perfect for anyone who wants to look tough and edgy without actually being tough and edgy at all. Because, let's face it, there's nothing 'tough' about doing crafts.
What you'll need:
- Sneakers
- Flat back studs
- Heavy duty glue
Directions:
- Glue the studs onto sneakers in any pattern you like.
- Let dry for 24 hours.
