Why the fanny pack should be your must-have this season

Fashion, being the cyclical beast that it is, brings back many things you thought you left behind — updated for today's trends. The fanny pack is having that kind of moment in fashion right now. A staple of the '80s, the "fanny pack" or "waist pouch" is not only one of the biggest trends out there again, but is a great any-season piece for its versatility, not to mention that it would be a great addition to your wardrobe. Today's version of the waist bag is not worn on the waist at all, but cross-body, and can add that perfect bit of texture or colour to an outfit. Some have a purely retro feel, while others display an updated functionality that can be the modern man's answer to the man-bag. There are many things to love about the waist bag, not the least of which is the convenience of carrying your wallet and keys in a secure bag. My waist bag carries my gym lock, skipping rope and can even fit a pair of slim trainers. I can swap out my gym stuff out for my camera as well, and it serves as the perfect, secure case for my passport and boarding passes on those travel trips when you want to keep stuff secure and close to you, and readily accessible. You simply can't go wrong with this price point, and although this Patagonia hip pack is available in black, I would go for one of the fun, retro-inspired colour combinations like this blue number.  It's on the smaller side so this would be the perfect one to carry your small essentials, like wallet and keys.

The swoosh sportswear giant makes more than just shoes, for instance this tech-hip pack which comes in this light, bone colourway — an off-white coloured accessory, because it matches everything except pure white... different shades of white is a difficult fashion maneuver to pull off, so just mix this with your more colourful or black outfits.

The Vancouver-based brand Herschel have created this version which offers an expandable main compartment and two front zippered pockets. The pack is a good size to carry your "walk-around" essentials but can also fit your mini, point-and-shoot camera if you always want to have it handy. It's available in a number of colours, but I'm digging this two-tone peacock blue and navy combination.

Arc'teryx is a great company from British Columbia which started as an outdoor equipment company. With Arc-teryx, you're guaranteed not only great functionality and performance but good design as well. I like this one since it has all the mini compartments you need like a phone pocket, but also a durable, water-repellent coating.

The brand Parra's aesthetic comes from the work of the Dutch artist Parra himself. His infamous pop-art style is on full display on this green waist pack. The turquoise, green and pink colour combination equals pure summer vibes.

Bright and fluorescent colours make a big return this season and luxury brand Balenciaga gets it right with this neon yellow version of their iconic explorer belt bag. If you're a biker like me, this serves as the stylish essential carry-all, while doubling as a safety visibility sign when worn cross body. Who says fashion and safety can't coexist?

Finally, the rockstar of the bunch, this Gucci leather belt bag. This is the pack you've probably noticed on a Kardashian, young musician or Jared Leto. This quintessential luxury bum bag is a show stopper on it's own, so stick to the classic black colourway; you've got to wear the bag, don't let it wear you.
