Trend Alert: 'Tourist chic' is here, and it's not going anywhere for a while

Fanny packs were just the start.

Fanny packs were just the start.

Do you scoff at tourist looks? Perhaps it's that their sensible shoes and cavernous bags packed with cameras, chargers and four types of sunscreen easily give away their visitor status. Or maybe they're just plain un-stylish in your books? Well, look again. From Vuitton's 'Island Life' collection to Kenzo's accessory-heavy 2018 looks, Prada's bum bags (fanny packs are back!) to Miu Miu's resort fabrics — fashion houses and their curators are embracing a look we can only call tourist-chic. Here's how to work these elevated vacation staples into your everyday style.

Exhibit A: The Funky Shirt (Hawaiian-vibes)

Hawaiian shirts and fab florals have long been a go-to when it comes to embracing getaway chic. But Canadian designers DSquared2 recently took it up a notch, donning a medley of looks for both men and women that played up colourful tops in a major way. Louis Vuitton (a fashion house known for its travel-inspired getups), went another direction, setting its sights on Kyoto, Japan for its 2018 spring/summer "Resort" collection.

Exhibit B: The Romper/Playsuit

There's a reason why the romper is an unmatched outfit-maker across all genders: it allows the body to breathe and just about anyone can get behind that. Plus, when you don't have to think about how to match your tops and bottoms, you have more time to explore, drift and frolic — at home or abroad. Miu Miu took advantage of the effortless style in their recent Resort collection, unveiling a breezy playsuit with a colourful, summery print.

Exhibit C: The Bum Bags (Fanny Packs)

Fanny packs aren't just good for festivals (however, concert-goers at Glastonbury sure embraced them this year), these bags have gotten the stamp of approval from the fashion industry, popping up on the runways of heavyweights like Prada, Miu Miu and Chanel and on stylish celebs like Kendall Jenner and A$AP Rocky. Sure, they remind us of decades past, but that doesn't mean new styles can't spice up your look. Besides, if Prada is cool with the fanny, so are we.

Exhibit D: Accessories (Head-to-toe)

Accessories are undoubtedly the easiest way to add flair and drama to any ensemble, which is why they've long been a go-to for trendsetters and globetrotters alike. Recently, Kenzo's Spring 2018 ready-to-wear collection featured a number of looks that dizzied-up and gleamed with accessories, all while embracing the tourist that wants to stand out. The best part? You can totally mix and match these functional and fashionable finds with so many of the looks mentioned above.
