Fall really is the best season for fashion. The ability to layer fabrics and mix textures (without having to cover them up with bulky parkas) makes for the most eclectic and interesting outfits of the year. And this year's trends, a mix of classic autumn looks and surprising colours and patterns, bring even more potential to craft some expressive ensembles.

Here's a look at of some of the hottest, fresh-off-the-runway styles for fall 2017 and all the ways you can wear them.

Seeing red

While burgundy and maroon are fall runway staples, it's less common to see more primary shades like the bright cherry red that keeps popping up this year. Don't be afraid to wear the hue head to toe for a gorgeously monochrome look that will definitely stand out.

A statement piece you can wear now and into the fall and winter with tights.

Flower power

Generally a spring trend, floral prints were all over fall runways this year. To make them work for the cooler months, layer your soft florals in delicate fabrics under thick wool coats and even mix them up with the season's vintage plaid pieces.

Millennial pink, a splash of red and a pretty floral print make these pants perfect for fall and next spring, too. Wear them with a red blazer for a bold combination.

Mad for plaid

Of course we see plaid every fall, but the twist this year is that it has more of a vintage '70s vibe than the '90s grunge thing that's been happening. While much of the plaid on the runways this year came in the form of wool coats, you can also get the look with tops, dresses and pants.

The bell sleeves and ruffle on this top definitely feel vintage without looking outdated. We love how they're paired with patterned pants for extra oomph.

J.Crew Collection Ruffle Top in Glen Plaid, $259, jcrew.com

While this dress is a bit '90s with its babydoll silhouette, the classic tartan, gathered high neck and metal tabs at the wrists make it feel more modern.

Jeans never go out of style and this year it seems that almost anything — from wash to fit— goes. What is new for fall this year, is the ultra-Canadian combination of denim on denim. So stock up on denim shirts and jackets to go with your collection of jeans.

This is such a cool jacket. The pockets make it almost a blazer, so it'll look even more like an actual denim suit when worn with jeans in a similar wash. And that's a good thing! (No, really.)

J.Crew Denim Chore Jacket with Patch Pockets, $168, jcrew.com

Update your denim collection with novelty details like these laced jeans and jacket. Wear them together for full effect.

Silver shimmer and shine

Slick, high-tech or shimmery, silver made the all fall runways shine. The trend is about way more than choosing the right metals and hardware, too. This time, fabric got the metallic treatment and it looks totally luxe.

You don't need to be going back to school to invest in a backpack. The silhouette is still trending, even more so when oversized and high shine.

Swap your everyday black boots for these silver ones to put a new spin on everyday outfits.
