Earth tones made modern: This fall's key colour palette is inspired by a blast from the past

There has been much ink spilled over the ever-changing kaleidoscope of trendy tones. First came millennial pink (and its Glossier-worshiping devotees), followed by its equally colourful cousins, canary yellow and light lavender. But the return to the runway of '70s styles like cords, bow blouses, prairie skirts and boxy faux furs have ushered in the signature shades of that decade.

Yes, earth tones like dark chocolate, tawny taupe and rusty red are back on must-have lists thanks to designers like Chloe, Zimmermann, Fendi and Rochas. A major departure from pretty pastels, brown's resurgence isn't happenstance. We are all looking for ways to live better, whether that means quitting sugar or passing up on plastic, and brown brings a natural, unbleached attitude to fashion's frenetic trend cycle. In the spirit of embracing Mother Earth, we've rounded up 9 natural-toned pieces to see us through the cooler months ahead.

A clever hybrid between a leather shirt and jacket, this buttery cognac piece is the ideal transition wear as the weather cools (it's reversible too). Wear it over dresses at night now and layer it with sweaters come late September.

You're about to wear boots every day for the next few months so why not pick a special pair? The patchwork leather, oversize buckles and squat, squarish heel give a modern '70s vibe while the mid-calf shaft makes this style perfect for wearing with skirts and dresses.

The polo has seen a recent resurgence. Moving beyond its tenure on the tennis court, this sophisticated version done in cloud-like cashmere would look just as polished on the weekend with jeans, as it would tucked into a pleated skirt at the office.

Tortoiseshell accessories can feel old fashioned, but there's beauty in the mottled mix of amber, ochre and cocoa. Chunky links and a healthy smattering of crystals keep this necklace from veering into fuddy duddy territory.

Big brands like Michael Kors and Gucci have vowed to step away from real fur. In so doing, faux coats have flooded the market. This cruelty-free, curly, caramel one is extra cute thanks to its waist-length crop.

The warm, nutty colour of this bag says retro but its structured shape makes it truly modern. Get extra mileage out of your investment by using the skinny cross-body strap to sling it across your coat.

Dark florals have been blooming for a few seasons. If you haven't jumped on the trend, now is your chance. The gauzy fabric gives airiness to this top strewn with pretty bronze petals and forest green stems strewn.

It's time to get reacquainted with corduroy. I've seen the soft stuff covering everything from suits to boots this season. The ankle-length chop on this pair of pants is the perfect opportunity to show off a statement shoe.

As summer's harsh rays fade fast, trade in your mirrored metallics for lighter ombre lenses. It's nearly impossible not to love these round Chloe frames with a sweet scalloped edge.
