If our BTS research at New York Fashion Week proves anything, it's that glitter isn't going anywhere, a little hairspray can go a long way and custom nail art is everything. But that's not all. Below, we've sourced the essential makeup products behind the standout trends of the Fall 2018 season.

This way to cool-girl waves

At Nicole Miller, next-day waves were the name of the game. "We want it to look a little bit more lived in and natural," explained Redken Canada pro Jorge Joao. "We used a curling starting about half way through hair and wrapping it, but leaving a bit of the ends out. We're kind of just working with the middle of the strand so it looks like it's just natural texture." After finger raking through hair, the pros backstage finished off with light spray Joao describes as a cross between dry shampoo and hairspray.

The custom press-on nail art

To celebrate his 10-year anniversary in the biz, designer Christian Siriano collaborated with KISS Impress Nails to create limited edition press-on nails. Backstage, nail pro Gina Edwards had a plan to use a jazzed up version of Siriano's set inspired by the colours and textures of the show's 75 looks. "We did the Impress Nails, and added the gold to create a frame," she said of the red and metallic designs. "With striping, even the simplest nail can look so elegant and on trend."

The fresh face 2-in-1 foundation

There's always something effortless about the Tibi girls, and it's not just the clothes. It's about the makeup too. This year's "(geo)tagged" look stood out for its colourful geometric winged eyes, but the skin here is also noteworthy. Behind-the-scenes, Stila's Sarah Lucero cleaned and prepped skin, and then applied a foundation and concealer 2-in-1 product to colour correct and even skintone giving skin a flawless finish.

The shiny statement eyeshadow

Who says you need black liner to make a statement? At Oscar de la Renta, Tom Pecheux declared makeup was all about individuality, and so he zeroed in on one show-stealing product: MAC Cosmetics' 3-D glitter. To get the look, he began with a base of lavender over eyelids, which he topped off lip gloss and loose sparkles to create an imperfect falling effect. Don't worry about getting just right, according to Pecheux, the appeal is in the imperfection.

The coolest colours for hair

Marc Jacobs's shows never fail to bring on the drama, and his latest proves no exception. Jacobs teamed-up with colourist Josh Wood to match the high-impact colour of each model's hair to her outfit. The end result was severe '80s night club-inspired bobs and cuts in stripes of fuchsia, purple and neon green. If you want to get the look at home, start by bleaching select strands before applying high-octane colours.

The new bold red lip

This season, the red lip came in many tones. For Brandon Maxwell's show, makeup pro Tom Pecheux, used multiple products to create the dramatic red lip look. He started with a red lip liner to give lips their shape, and then added MAC's liquid lipstick in Feels So Grand. For an extra pop, he applied a touch of golden lip colour right above the cupid's bow and along the bottom centre of the lip line using an eyeliner brush.

Glitter-tip nails

It wasn't just eyes that got covered in glitter. At Cushnie et Ochs, Julie Kandalec used chunky glitter polish to create "shattered metallic ombré" design inspired by architect Zaha Hadid's linear work. To nail the twinkling take on the classic French mani, Kandalec painted nails in one of two neutral shades and then gave nails a glittery boost to complement the collection's shiniest details.

Comeback accessories

Leave it to Alexander Wang to make claw clips cool again. In perhaps the biggest beauty shake-up of the season, Redken pro Guido Paulo, placed the throwback accessories around slicked hair twists to create an '80s executive vibe. The hair had a feel that was effortless and sculptural at the same time. And you better believe it's an easy one to recreate at home. Just rake hair back, twist and add the claw clip. You can apply a cream paste and pull out a few loose strands at the front to make it your own.

Try the terracotta lip

At contemporary designer Jonathan Simkhai's show, the terracotta lip was an unexpected twist that looked good on all the models. To get the surprisingly flattering shade he called "sophisticated spice" just so, makeup lead James Kaliardos began by filling in lips with a rich brown lip liner, and followed it up with Maybelline New York's SuperStay Matte Un-Nude Liquid Lipstick in Fighter.
