If you're one to want to hold onto that summer feeling for as long as possible, you're probably loathe to trade your breezy dresses in for warmer clothes. However, you don't actually have to vanquish summer dresses to the back of your closet when fall wardrobes come into full effect. Take those slips, denim dresses, maxis and more into the new season with a few styling tricks. Here's how to transition your favourite summer pieces into fall.

The slip dress

In theory, a slip dress seems unsuitable for cooler weather with its slinky silhouette. But the right layering takes it effortlessly into fall. If you already own a slip dress or are looking to buy one, layer a turtleneck or a fitted knit underneath to make it cool-weather appropriate. A floral print slip dress is the perfect way to dress up plain knits. Alternatively, you can choose a bright knit to wear with your favourite black slip dress for a pop of colour.

The maxi dress

Billowy maxi dresses don't have an expiry date. Whether you're into the equestrian print dress here from Simons with its ruffles and smocked collar, or love the airy vibe of this number from H&M with its flouncy hem, maxi dresses can be easily primed for the cooler season. Pair with a tailored blazer that'll add a strong silhouette to balance out the flowy dress. Throw on a pair of ankle boots to pull the look together.

The mini wrap dress

A mini wrap dress isn't just a staple for the summer. This versatile piece can be paired with a longer cardigan and knee-high boots, and the lightweight fabric of these dresses makes them ideal for layering without making you sweat. Opt for a open-front cardigan that lets you show off the details on your dress, like a self-tie belt at the waist.

The shift dress

With its boxy silhouette and comfortable fit, this is the dress you wore all summer long. Take it right into fall with a few adjustments: add a pair of tights which will help keep the shape intact while adding instant warmth. The pleating detail on the Ann Taylor dress and the drop flounce on the Reitmans dress, coupled with the darker hues, make both perfect for fall. Adding a belted cardigan also helps change up the look in a cinch.

The denim dress

A denim dress is as versatile as they come. Denim and leather are a foolproof combination so update your dress with a pair of leather boots and jacket to inject a dose of fall cool. If you have a denim shirt dress, wear it with an oversized cardigan or scarf. Or, if you love an overall dress, a full-sleeve collared blouse or cute knit underneath will keep it seasonally appropriate.
