This ultra-modern Montreal house includes a black and yellow staircase

Colour doesn’t need to be scary. Take some inspo from this modern Montreal home.

If you're not a fan of colour look away now.

But if you're a fan of that and great design, then the Canari house will be right up your alley.

The house was originally made from four separate apartments and the existing part of the house dates back to the 1930s. The project was designed by Naturehumaine and is chock-full of bright, colourful hues and offset by cool whites and greys. (Too much colour and you're looking at a Peewees Fun House sort of vibe. Very un-Montreal.)

The major design feature in this home has to be the black and yellow staircase which creates a bold and brash focal point for its occupants. "The layout of this sculptural object, playing with diagonal lines, is the central dynamic element of the house," the team said. "The stairway brings a warm and vibrant tone to the project."

Move into the bathrooms and the colours continue with bright pops of orange and blue which "energize the look of these confined spaces and complete the graphic composition of the project."

The main living areas are open concept and more subdued in nature, while still maintaining hits of geometric black shapes which "defines circulation through the house".

Don't be afraid of a little colour. You can take this design inspiration into your own home by adding some bright and brilliant colour hits using paint or accessories.
