The prettiest DIY faux floral wreath to make now and enjoy for years

This year, we decided our homes deserved the freshest-looking wreaths we could make. Naturally, we wanted it to be pretty, but we also went in search of something a little unexpected. Enter the incredibly talented Lady Hayes. Known for her stunning floral-inspired projects (including celeb-coveted flower crowns), she was kind enough to teach us how to craft the holiday wreath of our dreams. Maybe the best part? She came back with an everlasting wreath – featuring silk flowers — so we could enjoy our handiwork for years to come. Check, check and check!

Made with faux blooms sourced from your local craft supply store, this wreath is accessible, entirely customizable and you'll be eager to pull it out of storage year after year. A departure from the traditional evergreen boughs, this project subs in dusty miller, seeded eucalyptus and silver dollar eucalyptus to add texture and keep the colour scheme light and fresh. Meanwhile, the use of disco balls and pom poms, along with the use of light blooms in the place of reds and greens adds a hint of modernity and whimsy while keeping this DIY unexpectedly wintery and soft. You're going to want to adorn every door in your home with this pretty project, and maybe a few walls too.

A piece of advice from Lady Hayes herself for when you're sourcing your materials and creating your masterpiece:

First thing's first: Texture! Texture! Texture! A wreath should feel as good as it looks. Think sparkles, pom poms, metallics, soft florals, matte finishes. Next comes colour — I went with a soft palette of rose gold, pink, silver and dusted greens. Select 4-5 colours for this project and stick with them. Finally, have fun! Not everything you do will be a masterpiece and that's OK. Take the pressure of perfection off your plate; invite a pal over, pour some wine, plug those glue guns in, and get your wreath on.

What you'll need:

• Wire wreath frame (18 inches)
• 1 roll of green floral tape
• Green floral wire (22 gauge)
• Pliers
• Scissors
• An assortment of silk greenery (leaves on stems in various shapes and sizes), enough to cover wreath frame
• 6-8 large silk flowers
• 10 small silk flowers
• Glue gun and 1 pack of glue sticks
• 12 Christmas balls
• 5 pom poms
• 6 mini disco balls

Here's how to do it:

1. Begin by building a base of greenery. Cut the stems of your greenery and be sure to leave about 3 inches of stem behind.

2. Place your bunch of greenery into wire wreath frame and secure with floral tape. 

Continue around until entire frame is covered.

3. Add in different greenery for texture like dusty miller, seeded eucalyptus and silver dollar eucalyptus. This is a great way to fill in the gaps!

4. Now it's time to add your high impact pieces starting with glittery stems and flowers. For larger flowers, glue wire onto the back of your blooms and secure them to your wire wreath frame by looping wire through and twisting tightly at the back. Add smaller flowers with hot glue. Styling tip: Add your larger flowers to the bottom left side and smaller ones around the rest of the wreath.

5. Now add your Christmas balls. Use a variety of colours and textures and add them in any empty spaces with hot glue or wire.

6. Add pom poms and disco balls!

Have a good look at your wreath and look for empty spaces that need a little love. Fill them up by adding a little disco ball. Think about your arrangement and spread out the colours and textures as you work your way around the wreath.
