Experimenting with new trends in home decor can often be intimidating, and make you risk breaking the bank. Luckily, Steven pulled together the hottest styles that designers are going crazy for this fall and is armed with tips on how to make them work in your own home — without over-complicating or over-spending.

1. Raw woods

Rugged wood furniture and accents are perfect for infusing your home with a little rustic flair. They're also a great way to bring nature indoors as the months get colder and we all prepare to hibernate. Plus, these raw woods are super durable!  Thanks to their Patina finish, stains or spills will only add to the aged look of the piece, rather than sending it straight to the trash can.

2. Jewel-toned velvets

Velvet is popping up everywhere this season, from the catwalks to the showrooms. Velvet pieces, like the couch and pillows pictured above, add a hint of luxury to your living room, meaning you can finally live like the Queen you've always known you were inside. While these gemstone colours may not be for everyone, they're classic enough to stay on-trend forever.

3. Fur, fur and more fur

Whether you prefer real or faux, you can't go wrong with fur this fall. White furs, like the Mongolian goat fur chair above, add a classic Scandinavian feel, while faux fur blankets are perfect for enjoying some hot cocoa by the fire. Plus, they're so luxurious and cozy that you'll want to keep these pieces out into the warmer months.

4. Paint it black

Painted furniture has long gotten a bad rap, being labeled as tacky or déclassé. But the tides are changing, and we're more than ready to embrace this trend. Black paint is a great way to re-purpose an antique that you just can't part with. If you're living in a small space, don't be afraid of large furniture pieces, like the one pictured above. When placed against dark walls, it can actually help to open things up, making your house or apartment feel bigger than it actually is.

5. Warm metallics

Metals are a huge trend in fashion this autumn — and they're getting even more buzz in the world of home decor. Don't be afraid to mix different metallics, like brass, gold and copper, to get an eclectic look. Whether you go with a small accent, or a centrepiece, these warm tones are sure to add some glam to any room.

6. Love it or lucite

Straight from the showrooms of New York City, these lucite pieces are anything but cheap looking. Lucite is known as "acryllic glass" and was originally used in the military, before making its way into our homes. The best part about the material? It virtually disappears. Meaning, you can get the aesthetic of an oversized coffee table or bar cart, without the clunkiness of wood or metal.

7. Bold colours

We're always drawn to a splash of colour, and these neon accents are no exception. Don't feel the need to structure your entire room around these bright hues — they're actually better off as impact pieces. Place those pops of colour in a neutral room to create a contrast that'll wow everyone you have over for dinner.
