15 Halloween-y home accents that are more swoon than spooky

Tastefully macabre decor we'd keep out all year.

Tastefully macabre decor we'd keep out all year.

The scariest season of all is upon us. Perhaps you're the first on your block to adorn your home with terrifying decorations every October. Or maybe you go full-haunted house for your annual murder mystery dinner party. This year, forego the dollar store cobwebs and elevate your Halloween haunting a bit. Even if you're not feeling the Halloween spirit (this is about as much of a costume as I will muster this year) there's no need to ignore an excuse to decorate. Think gothic motifs, a hint of the macabre and subtly creepy, and sometimes glam pieces — we promise they exist. Whether you refuse to decorate solely for Halloween, or you're all-in for posh All Hallow's Eve, these are the pieces that you can keep on display all year long.

A rather divisive motif, snakes are often loved or loathed. But when they're gold-covered candlesticks? Inarguably glam. Mix these antique-finished beauties in among some gothic touches for your best Halloween tablescape yet.

"This looks like something my grandmother used to own," I hear you say. And to that I say, perfect. Take out your vintage candelabras, or vintage-inspired, like the one above, and start prepping that mantle for Halloween. Pieces like this look particularly haunting when you let the candle wax drip all over it, so maybe don't use your best table linens if this makes it to your dinner party table.

Everyone knows that a cauldron is the most convenient place to keep candy when handing out snacks to trick or treaters. And then when November rolls around, this also makes the prettiest plant stand.

Smoky glass is a must for your Halloween sipping. These "Ghost Smoke" wine glasses even sound ghoulish and I wholeheartedly believe that red wine would look extra frightful in these dark and moody must-haves.

Oh, original — skulls for Halloween. But hear me out. This black paraffin candle is perfect for this scary season; placed in a glass hurricane like the one above, and it's a cool decor accent for year-round enjoyment. Plus, skulls are not just for Halloween.

No werewolf pictured. Embrace Halloween more subtly by swapping out some prints. This full moon print is so pretty you'll want to keep it up all year long, but it's extra-apropos for Halloween, non? With Jenny's Print Shop, you pay to download the file, so you can print it in any size you want to fill up that new frame or fit into one that you already own.

Luna Print, $19.41, jennysprintshop.com

Why not hold all of your odds and ends in a box shaped like an organ? It's kind of quirky and a random eyeball laying around the house definitely says Halloween when the time comes.

DOIY Design Organ Eye Box, $39.99, drakegeneralstore.ca

This footed tray is just plain weird, a little bit creepy and I kind of love it. With hint of the macabre, it's ideal for Halloween, but as pictured above, it's the perfect place to keep candles — no matter the time of year.

Avian Footed Tray, $78.00, anthropologie.com

With a name like "White Orb String Lights", these are the perfect addition to your home this month. Is it a string of ghosts? Trapped spirits? What exactly are those ghoulish orbs? Keep these beauties up after Halloween and transition them into the holiday season when they become, simply, frosted lights. Easy peasy.

These placemats are basically magic. They're elegant and rather modern for all of your year-round tablescaping and then when Halloween rolls around, voila! They look like spider webs.

Round Silver Placemat, $24.95, crateandbarrel.com

With its hand illustrated feel and hues of light pink make this print very of-the-moment, while the black cat makes it extra special for October. It's available in five sizes, so you can work it into a gallery wall or make it a statement of its own.

A wreath of gnarled branches is kind of creepy and incredibly suitable for the season. Add it to a tabletop with a candle in a glass hurricane for a fun year-round accent, or throw some warm copper string lights on it and you can even take it into the next festive season.

Black Branch Wreath, $49.97, crateandbarrel.com

Swapping out cushion covers for Halloween-hues is an easy way to make an on-theme statement without going overboard, or with price points like these, over budget. Be sure to mix in lots of faux fur and velvet for a luxe look.

This snakeskin-print table runner is perhaps the most covetable piece from CB2's very grown up and very Halloween-appropriate collection. Remove all other gothic accents and it's no longer just for this time of year.

Slither Snakeskin Table Runner, $49.97, cb2.com

Reminiscent of old-timey apothecary jars, the amber glass of this vase is perfect for Halloween. With a wide mouth vessel like this one, you could fill it with creepy odds and ends and elevate those finds from the dollar store, or of course, display a bouquet of dark purple blooms befitting the season.
