The best ways to dress for your shape this holiday
The fun part about dressing up for the holidays is that almost anything goes — if you look and feel your best, that is. Dressing according to your personal style and dressing for your shape are two very different things. So, we've broken down a few of the most common body types, how to play down your problem areas and accentuate your best features, all while infusing key trends of the season.
Petite
You are: 5'4" and under, with a small frame.
The key to dressing a petite body type is not to overwhelm your small frame with lots of fabric. Look for short hemlines on dresses and skirts in order to lengthen your bottom half. Add a rock 'n' roll touch to a Victorian-style blouse with a suede mini skirt, sheer tights, and ankle boots. Keeping the bottom half monochromatic will add height to your silhouette. Skirt: Reformation ($238).
Pear shape
You have: Wide hips with a small waist.
Look for outfits with intricate designs at the chest and a flared skirt, which will balance out the top and bottom. The goal is to highlight your small torso and waist with a fitted top. The flare of the skirt will play off your curves. From left to right: Lace top: Self Portrait at Nordstrom ($541), Skirt: Winners ($39.99), Shoes: Ann Taylor ($205.71).
Rectangle/straight
You have: A long, slender frame with minimal curves.
The goal here is to create curves while showing off your arms and legs. Look for pieces with details at the shoulders or collar to add interest. This season's pajama-inspired trend is a perfect fit for this body type. This head-to-toe PJ-inspired outfit accentuates stature, while the drawstring creates the illusion of a waist. Add playful velvet and jeweled accessories to take this look from your bed to a party. Top and pants: LE FOU by Wilfred ($165 and $185), Purse: Ann Taylor ($177.91), Shoes: Winners ($199).
Apple
You have: A slim lower body and carry weight in your mid-section.
Dressing an apple body shape is all about showing off those legs! Short shift or empire-waist dresses that fall away from the body are a great way to minimize the midsection. We are absolutely loving the long, fitted-sleeve mini dress for the holiday season. Dress: Ann Taylor ($129), Purse: H&M, Shoes: Aldo ($90).
Hourglass
You have: Curves! Bust and hips are similar in proportion with a tiny waist in between.
The hourglass shape is all about balancing the upper and lower half of the body, while accentuating that tiny waist. It's important to choose tops that are fitted or structured at the bust and hug the waist. Belts are a great tool to highlight a small waist, while V-necks are extremely flattering for a larger bust and draw attention to the neck and face. Look for updated wrap dress styles in of-the-moment materials, like this emerald green velvet number. Dress: H&M ($49.99), Belt: J.Crew ($102), Shoes: Zara ($45.90).
Athletic
You have: A broad chest and wide shoulders with a narrow waist and hips
The goal with athletic body types is to highlight the arms and soften the shoulders at the same time, while creating the illusion of curves below. Look for dresses with halter necklines or flutter sleeves, belted waists and a full skirt. Dress: Ted Baker ($399), Shoes: Nine West ($70).
