3 holiday decorating trends we're loving this year

With those long, snowy months ahead, we're turning to holiday decor to add a little sparkle and a lot of cozy warmth to our spaces this season. And we're seeing this echoed in the looks we're spotting in stores and in our feeds for 2019. While Scandinavian-sleek, chalet chic and retro glam are certainly nothing new — and neutral colours, cozy faux furs, greenery and golds are still going strong — we're seeing newer palettes and pairings. Moody hues of emeralds paired with minty greens, mixed metals combined with pinks for a go-go glam, and a more refined woodland aesthetic are this year's standout looks. Scandi-glam

Scandinavian-inspired decor has been mainstay of the holidays here at home for years now, but this season, we're seeing it styled with a slight departure from what we're used to. While the minimalist aesthetic and calming neutrals remain, mixed in are moodier hues, like greens and blues, which gives the whole look a bit of a glam, even drama, for the holidays. 

Don't be afraid to work in those gorgeous greens: mints, emeralds, deep blues all pair beautifully with the more neutral palette of creams and whites we've been seeing for seasons past — as evidenced in the inspo images from Copenhagen-based designers Ferm Living, and in the bowl of ornaments pic from H&M Home. Add texture with greys, light-coloured woods, and knits, as seen in the fireplace from Crate&Barrel. Incorporate a bit of glam with gold and candlelight, which always pair well. And when it comes to greenery, opt for some of the less-expected boughs, such as cypress or cedar, which are lighter in hue, offer a little variance in texture, and often look a little less full than the go-to garlands we've been working with for years.

Into the woods

This season's woodland aesthetic is all about warm wood, cozy fur, and critters! But think more refined and minimal, less Canadiana-kitsch, as pictured in the mantel photo from designer Emily Henderson; less red buffalo plaid and more browns, beiges and creams, as seen in the beautiful bedroom and sofa shots from H&M Home. We're also seeing lots of texture added through cushions and throws, in a more neutral palette than the ski chalet aesthetic of seasons past, as seen in the inspo images from Restoration Hardware. And whether or not you're a fan of raccoons IRL, you'd have to admit they can be a great way to add texture and fun in one swoop, as seen in the cutest ever Crate&Barrel image here.

This look is inspired by nature without straying into full-fledged hunting cabin territory. Work in a bit of whimsy with some of those buri fibre woodland creatures that have been popping up everywhere. For ornament and accents, gold is still going very strong in the world of X-mas decor, and it pairs perfectly with this palette. Add plenty of pines, and touches of wood to make it even more forest-y, and cozy up with lots and lots of faux furs.

Dusty rose and friends

Pink has been a minor player in the world of holiday decor for a few years now, but instead of the Candyland motif that's been popular lately, this year we're seeing a more sophisticated iteration: dusty rose. This gorgeous shade is just so versatile and perfect for pairing. As seen in the mantel pic from CB2, it goes great with metallics, and don't be afraid to mix your metals. There's something very vintage-y about this look, it even lends a bit of an art deco vibe, so don't hesitate to work in inherited or vintage-inspired ornaments onto your tree or table. Pale blues, and copper hues also work well with this palette, as seen in the ornaments image from Crate&Barrel. Soften the look with faux furs, allll the velvets, and plenty of twinkle.

The beauty of this trend is that is also pairs gorgeously with the popular mid-century modern look that is still so prominent, and it looks so stunning with the burnt oranges and neutral tones that often go along with it — and in this living room from Nat Spencer.
