This grouse wants a mate — but he's got stiff competition
Ruffed grouse drum up the mood in a springtime showdown in Parry Sound, ON.
Hello, Spring!
In the forests of northern Ontario, the snow has just melted and the trees are budding once more. Here, male ruffed grouse are trying to drum up some interest from female admirers.
The male finds a log, stump or rock, puffs out his chest, and flaps his wings up to fifty times, sending out his good vibrations through the forest.
But all his activity has attracted some competition. Another male is also looking to drum up some attention. But this patch ain't big enough for the both of them.
