Elora has enjoyed baking since her childhood growing up in Bangladesh. After moving to Canada with her husband, she eventually reconnected with baking after learning that her son was diabetic. Her home baking allowed him to enjoy treats with less sugar. Now, it's a form of relaxation and she enjoys infusing South Asian flavours into classically French desserts.
She loves to serve her elegantly decorated treats alongside her pretty pink tea set during elaborate tea parties for family and friends. Elora also channels her creativity into hobbies of painting and creating resin geode art, which she taught herself to do by watching internet tutorials.
When did you start baking? In 2009, my one and only son was diagnosed with diabetes when he was three years old.
All kids, including my son, like to eat sweets. He loved donuts but couldn't eat the carbs so I started to learn how to bake things with less sugar. If a store-bought doughnut has 50 grams of carbs, I try to reduce it to 20 grams of carbs. Since then, I've fallen in love with baking!
What's your signature bake? Mango mousse cake.
What is your fondest memory in the kitchen? Baking with my son. Now we can't because he is busy with his studies.
Why do you think you can be Canada's Best Amateur Baker? I'm a competitive person! Even when I bake at home, I sometimes use a timer. I think baking is an art!
