MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA—After interacting with the locals as they served him at the all-inclusive resort and eating more all-you-can-eat breakfasts than most people can stomach, Jake Morrison of Toronto left his friend's destination wedding with memories that will last him until he surely has to do it again within the next few years.

Morrison hoped that $2,000 in flight and accommodations, another $1,000 on a Vegas bachelor party, as well as 60% of his allotted vacation days, would be a good enough wedding gift for the couple that he sees only a few times a year.

"I was planning on vacationing somewhere that I wanted to go this year, but it's incredible that I get to do this instead," says Morrison. "I mean, Jamaica? Who gets to go there? Who would think to go to such a unique and unpredictable place?"

Morrison was able to save up for this wedding by not spending on luxuries like his own happiness.

"Most weddings I spend only a few hundred dollars on a gift, and what do I get out of that? With a destination wedding, sure, it costs about 10 times as much, but I'm getting twice as many memories," says Morrison.

"The math isn't there, but knowing that I've helped them kick off the five years this marriage will last is priceless."

Trish Johnston, the glowing bride, was happy to have 100 of her closest acquaintances there to enjoy her special day.

Looking to one-up her sister's recent wedding in Prince Edward County, Johnston knew that her wedding needed to require passports and people's valuable time.

"A wedding day for an attendee is something that they'll only get to experience, what, 40-50 times in their life?" says Johnston. "So why have it somewhere that you can drive to? Why not have it somewhere that'll make you say 'Wow, that's going to require some planning.'"
