The Breadwinner, an animated film based on the young adult book by Deborah Ellis and produced by Angelina Jolie, is nominated for an Academy Award for animated feature film.

Originally published in 2000, The Breadwinner follows a girl named Parvana who disguises herself as a boy so she can earn money to support her family in Afghanistan. Ellis has since written several books in the Breadwinner series, including Parvana's JourneyMud City and My Name Is Parvana.

The Breadwinner was directed by Nora Twomey and stars Saara Chaudry. Jolie co-produced the film.

Twomey approached Jolie to serve as an executive producer, since the actor and director has had her own experiences in Afghanistan as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador promoting education for girls.

"I really love this story because it's so much about family," Jolie said of The Breadwinner during the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.

Another book adaptation, Call Me By Your Name, scored four nominations. The film, which is based on the 2007 novel by André Aciman, is nominated for best picture, actor in a leading role, adapted screenplay and original song.

Other book adaptations to receive nominations include The Disaster Artist, Mudbound and Molly's Game for adapted screenplay, Wonder for makeup and hairstyling and Victoria & Abdul for costume design and makeup and hairstyling.

Christopher Plummer received a nomination for actor in a supporting role for his work in All the Money in the World, which is based on Painfully Rich by John Pearson.

The Oscars will take place on March 4, 2018. You can follow all of CBC's Oscar coverage here.
