Indie pop band Tegan and Sara are writing a memoir. The book, titled High School, will be released on Sept. 24, 2019.
High School will share the life story of the famous identical twins and LGBTQ icons. Tegan and Sara Quin grew up in Calgary at the height of grunge and rave culture in the 1990s. High School will be written in chapters alternating between Tegan's point of view and Sara's. The memoir will explore how they coped with their parents' divorce and now they navigated issues around love, drugs, sexuality, queer identity and academic pressures during their high school years.
The book also promises to address longstanding fan questions about the musical duo, particularly around their music, sexuality and social activism.
Tegan and Sara have openly identified as lesbian since their musical careers began two decades ago. Over those 20 years, they have sold well over one million records and released eight studio albums, including Heartthrob, which won the Juno for album of the year in 2014, and featured the single Closer, which won the Juno for single of the year. They received the Juno for group of the year that same year. They also have been nominated for the Polaris Prize three times and received a Grammy nomination, a Governor General's Performing Arts Award and a GLAAD Media Award.
In 2016, they started the Tegan and Sara Foundation to raise awareness and funds to address inequalities facing LGBT women and girls.
In 2011, Sara Quin appeared on Canada Reads, where she defended Jeff Lemire's graphic novel Essex County.
"How did you start your band? When did you know that you were gay? What were you like before Tegan and Sara? We have spent twenty years answering those complicated questions with simple answers," said Tegan and Sara in a statement. "Writing High School gives us the opportunity to tell the intricate stories that shaped our relationship as sisters, musicians and queer girls."
