Original Sisters

A collection of portraits by Anita Kunz.

Anita Kunz

Locked-down in her Toronto home studio by COVID and longing for inspiration, artist Anita Kunz began, in March 2020, researching women on the Internet. She wasn't sure what she was looking for, but she soon found an array of extraordinary women who had done amazing things— some of whom she had heard of, but most of whom she had not. And then she began to paint these women and write down their stories. What emerged was an astonishingly eclectic group from ancient history to the present day: from Hatshepsut to Joan of Arc to Josephine Baker to Rachel Carson to Misty Copeland. (From Random House Canada)

Anita Kunz is a celebrated illustrator whose work has been published in Time magazine, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, GQ and The New York Times. Her sculptures and paintings have appeared in museums around the world, including the Norman Rockwell Museum and Teatrio Cultural Association. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

"Some artists I know don't necessarily want to work with a monkey. They don't want to give up that control. But I don't mind that much because I think there's a bigger purpose to it."
