CBC Books reached out to Canadian writers for the books they recommend during uncertain times.

Michelle Good is a Canadian fiction writer whose new book is Five Little Indians. In the novel, Kenny, Lucy, Clara, Howie and Maisie were taken from their families and sent to a residential school when they were very small. Barely out of childhood, they are released and left to fend for themselves in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

Good recommends reading the nonfiction book The North-West is Our Mother by Jean Teillet.

"Though it is a meticulously researched historical tome, this book is a page turner! Teillet writes with a spirited voice and gives the reading the critical missing chapter in Métis history. A great work and an great opportunity for deepened understanding of the Métis journey. Can't put it down!"

Author and Indigenous rights lawyer Jean Teillet on her epic history of the Metis nation, The North-West Is Our Mother, which is a finalist for the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, at the Manitoba Book Awards.
