Eden Robinson wins 2018 Copper Cylinder Adult Award for Canadian literature of the fantastic
Eden Robinson was voted the winner of the Copper Cylinder Adult Award, a prize for Canadian literature of the fantastic, for her novel Son of a Trickster.
The annual prize invites members of Sunburst Award Society, a collective of fantasy writers and enthusiasts, to vote on the best fantasy novel of the previous year. Named after James De Mille's A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder, which is considered to be the first Canadian scientific romance, the prize comes with a handcrafted copper cylinder trophy.
Robinson's novel follows a teenager named Jared who struggles to keep his family afloat, while also contending with random supernatural happenings. The novel was shortlisted for the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize and was followed by the sequel Trickster Drift.
The Copper Cylinder Young Adult Award was given to two books: S.M. Beiko for Scion of the Fox, a novel about an orphaned high school student whose life is changed when a fox spirit saves her life, and Kari Maaren for Weave a Round Circle, the story of a girl whose world is upended by her new magical next door neighbours.
