Watch The Marrow Thieves trailer in Anishinaabemowin

Cherie Dimaline's dystopian YA novel The Marrow Thieves was defended by Jully Black on Canada Reads 2018. Prior to this year's debates CBC produced a trailer for each contending book, giving a brief synopsis of the themes and characters.

One of the main themes of the novel is the empowerment and celebration of Indigenous cultures and traditions. The trailer for The Marrow Thieves is narrated in Anishinaabemowin, the Ojibwe language, by Couchiching First Nations visual artist and filmmaker Susan Blight. It was translated by Blight — who also delivered part of Dimaline's Governor General's Literary Award acceptance speech in Anishinaabemowin — with the help of Jason Jones.

The Marrow Thieves follows Frenchie, an Indigenous teen who joins a group of nomadic strangers that soon become a surrogate family as they flee north to escape a government that wants to harvest their dreams.
