During an unfortunate mishap, young Awâsis loses Kôhkum's freshly baked world-famous bannock. Not knowing what to do, Awâsis seeks out a variety of other-than-human relatives willing to help. What adventures are in store for Awâsis?

Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock highlights the importance of collaboration and seeking guidance from one's community, while introducing the Cree words for different animals and baking ingredients.

Tony will champion Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock by Dallas Hunt, illustrated by Amanda Strong on CBC Kids Reads.

The 2024 CBC Kids Reads Special will air on March 7 at 8:10 a.m. local time. CBC Kids hosts Tony, Janaye, Gary the Unicorn, Mr. Orlando, Cottonball and Mosey, along with kids from across Canada will present — through dance, song, baking and art —why their picture book should be crowned this year's winner! 

Dallas Hunt is a teacher, writer and member of Wapisewsipi (Swan River First Nation) in Treaty 8 territory in Northern Alberta. Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock is his first picture book. Hunt has also written a book of poetry called Creeland. He teaches at the University of British Columbia.

Amanda Strong is a Michif Indigenous filmmaker, media artist, illustrator and stop motion director based in Vancouver. Strong has exhibited work and screened films worldwide, including at the Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival.
