Yazmin Monet Butcher pays tribute to the sweetest (and stickiest) of seasons

A juicy gem by Yazmin Monet Butcher. (Yazmin Monet Butcher)

August already? It's time to squeeze every last drop out off summer, and let this juicy logo be a reminder. It's the work of Yazmin Monet Butcher, a multi-hyphenate artist whose work has appeared in the New York Times and Flare. Created in Photoshop ("whilst Never Have I Ever played in the background") it's her tribute to the sweetest (and stickiest) of the seasons. Read on to learn more.

Let's talk about your logo design! What inspired the concept?

Even though it's toward the end of summer — I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! — I still wanted that juicy, drippy, height of summer feeling. I knew I wanted it to have a retro laid-back feel too (this summer has really shifted me back to basics), so I went with an air-brushed technique.

Why fruit?

Fruits are delicious and sexy, sweet and sticky ... just how I hope my summers are (haha). Seriously, though, fruits just taste better in the summer and truly are so lovely to look at. I love me some highlights.

When it comes to your graphic design and illustration work, what inspires your aesthetic?

I'm really inspired by the '70s design aesthetic and retro-futurism. I love a nod to the past while also twisting it on its head and adding a contemporary element! I love awkward/contradictory pairings (colours, typefaces, patterns).

What's the project you're most proud of?

I just solo directed my first music video for the musician lemin, and it was one of the scariest things I've ever done. I've always expressed my voice visually, but this was a huge practice in using my literal voice and I cannot wait to do it again.

What's your favourite place to see art?

In people's homes, at an art gallery or outside. (The Bentway, for example, has a really cool installation right now!)

Who's the last artist you discovered online?

Zach Lieberman (@zach.lieberman).

What work of art do you wish you owned?

Oh wow. I'd love to own San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk by Monet or any of van Gogh's Sunflower paintings. Oh gosh, or anything by Matisse.
