Designing Director X: How comic books helped lead to 'Hotline Bling'

This weekend, an interview with none other than Director X will help cap off our 11-week first season of CBC Arts' new film talk show The Filmmakers. Though best known for iconic music videos like Drake's "Hotline Bling" and Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous," the Toronto-born director made his first foray into feature films with 2015's Across The Line, which will air after the episode. But in this preview of his interview, he goes back to the beginning...

"One of my first influences was comic books," Director X says. "I bring that with me. I had a graphic design sensibility that was very strong. So I thought I was going to be a graphic designer for a while."

He says you can see that influence — among many others — in his music videos.

"You see it in 'Hotline Bling,' you see it in the Sean Paul video," he says. "You see when I do art directed work — you can tell that's me. I'm very much a part of the design process."

The season finale of The Filmmakers airs this Saturday at 10 p.m. (10:30 NT) on CBC Television, or stream it at cbc.ca/watch. After the episode, stick around to see this week's feature presentation, Director X's Across The Line.
