Sort Of is officially coming back for Season 2
One of last year's best new shows has been renewed by CBC and HBO Max
Get ready for another round of Sort Of.
It was announced today that CBC and HBO Max have renewed one of the best new shows of 2021 for a second season. This is perhaps not surprising given that the series debuted to rave reviews last fall before going on to lead the year's Canadian Screen Award nominations, nabbing more nominations than any TV show or movie — but it is welcome news for its many fans nonetheless.
Created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, the series stars Baig as Sabi Mehboob, a gender-fluid millennial who straddles various identities from bartender to youngest child in a large Pakistani family to the de facto parent of a family in downtown Toronto. The second season will continue Sabi's adventures, with Baig hinting that some new faces will join them.

"We are so thrilled that we are able to dive back into the worlds of Sort Of, and to keep exploring the evolution of all our characters (including some new ones!) as they continue to investigate who they are in the world as friends, family members, lovers and human beings," says Baig.
Sally Catto, General Manager of Entertainment, Factual & Sports at CBC, said in a statement that Sort Of "speaks to the complexity of being human with wit, warmth and an authentic sense of inclusivity, thanks to the distinct voices of Bilal and Fab. [It] has struck such a powerful chord with audiences, and we are thrilled to work with HBO Max and Sienna Films on the next chapter of Sabi's story."
Notably, the series featured the first non-binary lead character ever on Canadian television, while Baig was also the first queer, South Asian, Muslim actor to star in a Canadian primetime TV series. It also included extensive representation for other brown, queer, trans and non-binary artists, both in front of and behind the camera. Many of them were among the recipients of those 13 Canadian Screen Award nominations, which included a nod for best comedy series as well as three separate mentions for best writing in a comedy series.
The Canadian Screen Award winners will be announced next month, while fans can look out for the second season of Sort Of later in 2022.
