Kathryn Hahn on flexing her comedic and dramatic chops in Agatha All Along
The actor reprises her role from WandaVision in Marvel’s new Agatha-focused spin-off
"I never would have seen myself in this world," Kathryn Hahn tells Q guest host Talia Schlanger about her starring role in the new Marvel series Agatha All Along. Hahn, who's best known for playing memorable supporting roles in comedies like Step Brothers and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, first played the powerful witch Agatha Harkness in the 2021 series WandaVision.
Agatha All Along picks up where WandaVision left off, with Agatha trapped in the town of Westview, N.J. After "a suspicious goth teen" (as Marvel puts it), helps break her free from a distorted spell, she takes him on the legendary Witches' Road, which, if survived, will reward a witch with what they're missing.
The series sees Hahn shifting between comedy and drama, which is something she's been doing throughout her career. Some of her emotionally heavy films include the Oscar-nominated Revolutionary Road and Tamara Jenkins's comedy-drama Private Life.
"That's my favourite genre," Hahn says about Private Life. "It's that thin line between comedy and, I guess, dramedy — whatever it is — it's that mush of just humanity that's kind of gray…. I find it deeply funny because it's so deeply real."
In Agatha All Along, Hahn takes her ability to pivot between genres to a new level: she takes on multiple characters, in various worlds and across genres. The series has it all, from slapstick vaudevillian comedy to layered dramatic moments, and, of course, a ton of stunts.
"Agatha Harkness has always struck me as a performer," Hahn says. "She's able to hide herself a little bit underneath all of these different identities. She's acting."
For Hahn, Agatha All Along was simply "a natural progression" in her career. "It felt like it all led to Agatha Harkness," she tells Schlanger.
Marvel's Agatha All Along drops on Disney+ tomorrow, Sept. 18.
