Oscar nominee Regina King and Colman Domingo get emotional reflecting on If Beale Street Could Talk

“I just cannot wait for young black girls to see this. To see this is how your father is supposed to love you, this is how your man is supposed to love you.”

Regina King could win her first Oscar on Sunday night for her role in Barry Jenkins' latest film If Beale Street Could Talk. She's largely considered the frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actress trophy (she's already won a slew of awards for her Beale Street role, including a Golden Globe), and if you've seen the film, you will understand why.

Regina King and Colman Domingo sit down with CBC Arts host Amanda Parris

King plays Sharon Rivers, a warm and courageous mother whose dedication to her daughter will bring you to tears. King's onscreen husband, Joseph, is played with equal dedication and tenderness by Colman Domingo. The pair glow on screen with compassion as a kind of ideal set of parents — ones who accept their children's decisions with love, fight for them and emotionally support them.

King and Domingo sat down with CBC Arts' Amanda Parris to talk about their roles in If Beale Street Could Talk and the one scene that still makes them both get emotional.
