For August, a logo design that celebrates Black love and beauty
Hear from the artist, Toronto-based painter Kofi Frempong
Every month, we feature a new take on the CBC Arts logo created by a Canadian artist. Check out our previous logos!
Head to YouTube, and you can actually see this month's profile pic materialize on the canvas. The painter is Kofi Frempong, who uploaded that timelapse video last year. He's a Toronto-based community health worker with a life-long passion for art, and you'll find the same sizzling palette in most of Frempong's paintings.
"I am known for my use of vibrant warm colours and free brushstrokes," he writes, and his work spreads a positive message. His art, he says, is all about "Black love and beauty," and this logo design is no exception. He answered a few questions over email.
Name: Kofi Frempong

Let's talk about your design! The image behind the gem is an old painting of yours, right? What's it called?
She is called Safi and it is also my favourite piece in my collection.
What's that painting about to you, and why did you choose to use it in this logo design?
She represents the love and support that I have and continue to receive from Black women. I chose the Safi piece because of what she represents: love.
What had you originally planned to be doing this summer? How is the pandemic affecting your day-to-day life right now?
Before the pandemic, I was planning on curating public exhibits, live-painting and creating spaces that are conducive to love, learning, laughter and endless possibilities.
What's your favourite place to see art?
Is everywhere an acceptable response?
Who's the last artist you discovered online?
Funnily enough, I rediscovered the art of one of my best friends. I've known him to be a great artist, but recently developed a newfound respect for him. His name is Eric Tigley.
What work of art do you wish you owned?
I would like to own a beautiful art gallery. Beautiful spaces are works of art to me.
Where can we see more from you?
At the moment, you can see my work on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
