Teen artist Evan Sharma opens up to CBC Arts about his painting practice, the importance of finding a work/life balance and how he feels about eyes.

Evan Sharma was 10 years old when saw the "Mona Lisa" for the first time. He was transported and fascinated by how such a small painting could have such a massive effect on the people who see it. He also took away the experience of seeing art up close, admiring every brushstroke.

Three years later, Sharma has become a prodigious painter. He makes bold portraits, calling his style "vibrant impressionism" — a reflection of the way he sees the world and his own inner emotional life. He's had no formal training, yet he's already being compared to the greats. And he's got an incredible sense of priorities for somebody who's just entered his teens: as he explains in the video above, he's deliberately kept up with his skiing and sailing, keeping himself, as he puts it, "multi-versed."

Most recently, Sharma had his own dedicated spot at Toronto's The Artist Project, and he continues to pursue his artistic dreams with the support of his family. You're about to meet an amazing young artist. Go Evan!

Priscilla Galvez and Jeff Pavlopoulos

Priscilla Galvez is a Toronto-based Producer and Director. Most recently, she produced the BravoFACT short film The Emissary and is currently in post-production on a sci-fi action short The Drop In for Bell Media. Priscilla is in development on the web-series Off Kilter with director Alejandro Alvarez Cadilla as well as directing and co-writing the short film Wolf Alice, based on the short story by Angela Carter. Jeff Pavlopoulos is a Toronto-based writer, director and cinematographer striving to encounter the unfamiliar in the everyday. He is currently developing a short series, Secret Chiefs, about the invisible ties that bind us to one another, and the hidden, sometimes dangerous world that exists all around us.
