Mattea Roach's latest historic win? Canada Reads 2023

Canada Reads wrapped up yesterday, and Kate Beaton’s graphic memoir Ducks, championed by Mattea Roach, won it all. It's a story about the climate crisis, but it’s also a moving portrait of the people she meets working in the Alberta oil sands. Both Kate Beaton and Mattea Roach join host Elamin Abdelmahmoud just a few hours after their win.

Canada Reads wrapped up yesterday, and Kate Beaton's graphic memoir Ducks won it all. The book was championed by podcast host and Jeopardy! super-champ Mattea Roach.

Beaton's novel tells the story of her first couple of years out of university when, like many other East Coast folks before her, she decided to go work in the Alberta oil sands. The book is about the climate crisis, but it also offers a moving portrait of the people working in this harsh environment.

Both Kate Beaton and Mattea Roach joined Elamin Abdelmahmoud to talk about their historic win, just a few hours after it all went down.

You can listen to the full discussion from today's show on CBC Listen or on our podcast, Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud, available wherever you get your podcasts.
