34 years ago, David Cronenberg explained what attracts people to horror films
'They have a need to confront death'
In 1983, David Cronenberg sat down with CBC's Barbara Frum during a segment of The Journal, explaining exactly why people love his films and what attracts moviegoers to horror films.
"They have a need to confront death," he told Frum. "They have a need to confront aging. They have a need to confront the dark corners of existence."
Cronenberg also explained what a voyeuristic experience watching a horror film can be. "Most people would prefer to do that in a metaphorical way, in a controlled way they like to go into a dark theatre and confront their own demons and then have the lights come up and be able to walk out afterwards."
With Canadian Film Day around the corner, we take some time to reflect on Cronenberg's words and how they still hold true today.
