Carlos Campos with wife Lisbeth J. Bracho and son Carlos Eduardo Campos Bracho. Born in Venezuela they now live in Montreal. He became a Canadian citizen on October 14, 2016 in Montreal. For Carlos, the top priority was the safety and wellbeing of his kids.

"[Our kids] were bound up together."

This story is part of Becoming Canadian, a year-long project sharing stories of struggle and triumph from new Canadian citizens.

"We were robbed many times [back in Venezuela]. Three, four, five times. The last one was when my two kids were in our home. We were out and they were alone. When they opened the door [the thieves] came in the house and they found that situation. [Our kids] were bound up together."

That made a break in our life and we really decided to make a change.

"That made a break in our life and we really decided to make a change, look forward and look ahead, and find somewhere where it's more safe, where we have a better chance to stay alive."
